Visitors will find plenty of places to get outdoors in Farragut and the surrounding area. Bass fishing, boating and birdwatching are popular in and around Fort Loudoun Lake, the uppermost dam on the Tennessee River, flanking Farragut. If you are a history buff, check out the Knoxville Civil War Trail, which ends in Farragut where the Battle of Campbell’s Station is commemorated. Spend an afternoon strolling through town on the Farragut History Walk to learn about the people, places and events that make the area’s history significant. Learn about the town’s namesake, Adm. David Farragut at the Farragut Memorial Plaza, located at Town Hall. Farragut was the first U.S. Navy officer to hold the rank of admiral and rose to fame when he captured the city of New Orleans for the Union army during the Civil War. Known as The Secret City, Oak Ridge was a key player in the development of the atomic bomb that ended World War II and part of the Manhattan Project. Only 15 minutes from Farragut, the interactive American Museum of Science and Energy in Oak Ridge will surprise you with its many secrets.
