Mar 23 Jazz on the Move: Miles Davis "Kind of Blue" Presented by Don Aliquo and Rod McGaha Nashville, TN Miles Davis's album "Kind of Blue" was released by Columbia Records in August 1959. Featuring pianist Bill Evans, saxophonists “Cannonball” Adderly and John Coltrane, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Jimmy Cobb, the album was certified quadruple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America in 2008. It is regarded by many as Davis's masterpiece recording, Rolling Stone magazine ranked the album No. 12 on its 2003 list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Nashville saxophonist and Director of Jazz Studies at MTSU, Don Aliquo and jazz trumpeter Rod McGaha will present the afternoon’s program. Don Aliquo, the son of a jazz musician, grew up in Pittsburgh where he performed with many of the region’s greats. Early in his career, he toured with the Tommy Dorsey Band and with Buddy Rich. Rod McGaha is one of Nashville's most popular and versatile jazz trumpeters. A Chicago native, he was a protégé of trumpet legend Clark Terry and former bandmate of the great Max Roach. McGaha is at home in virtually all musical styles, with recordings and performances that can encompass jazz, blues, gospel, funk, and big band. He is steeped in the music of Miles Davis and presented a 2009 Jazz on the Move segment on the life and music of the jazz icon.
