BATTLE OF FRANKLIN TRUST ANNOUNCES SPRING HILL BATTLEFIELD TOUR

Sep 12, 2014

A comprehensive Spring Hill battlefield and Oaklawn Plantation tour will be led by historian and Battle of Franklin Trust CEO Eric A. Jacobson 8 a.m. Oct. 4 beginning at Carnton Plantation.

“After I released the second edition of ‘For Cause & For Country: A Study of the Affair at Spring Hill and the Battle of Franklin’ last November, I’ve had many requests to host a battlefield tour of Spring Hill,” said Jacobson. “To understand what unfolded at Franklin on the last day of November in 1864 is to also understand what did and did not happen around Spring Hill the day before. It is one of the most incredible stories of the entire war. Through the generosity of the current owner of Oaklawn we’re fortunate to be able to tour inside the home as well.”

Oaklawn Plantation was home to Absalom Thompson during the Civil War and Confederate Gen. John Bell Hood’s headquarters on the afternoon and evening of Nov. 29, 1864. The plantation, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is considered one of the finest in the region. It was chosen as Hood’s headquarters just prior to the Battle of Spring Hill, largely because of its location and the fact that one of Thompson’s sons served as a surgeon in the Confederate Army of Tennessee.

Tickets are $100. A portion of the proceeds from the tour will be allocated to the ongoing care and maintenance of Oaklawn.

The group will travel by bus to Spring Hill and will return to Carnton by 11 a.m. Reservations can be made by contacting Angell Roberts at 615-794-0903 or by e-mailing angell@battleoffranklintrust.org.
