150th Battle of Parker's Crossroads Nov. 3-4

Nov 1, 2012

The 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Parker’s Crossroads will be commemorated Nov. 3-4 with reenactments and living history demonstrations depicting the Dec. 1862 West Tennessee battle.

Beginning at 9 a.m., attendees to the two-day commemoration can walk the battlefield trails, visit living history areas featuring mid-nineteenth century civilian and military demonstrations, tour encampments of both Confederate and Union soldiers, view camp life, drills, medical and skirmish demonstrations and stroll through Sutlers row for a sampling of Civil War era shopping.

“The Parker’s Crossroads living history and reenactment encourages individuals and families to look back into their heritage to learn from the past by walking in an outdoor classroom setting,” said Rep. Steve McDaniel. “This time in our state’s history was the most tragic time ever experienced by Tennesseans.”

Sutler Row and Living History areas will be open 9 a.m.to 5 p.m. Programs include talks led by Brain T. “Doc” Edwards, Gen. Grant portrayed by Dr. E.C. Fields, Randy Bishop, Richard Butler, Dr. Lonnie Maness and “Dunham’s Counter Attack” and” Charge ‘em Both Ways,” narrated by Mr. Dan Kennerly.

Confederate Gen. Nathan Forrest and Union Col. Cyrus Dunham met at Parker’s Crossroads, where another Union brigade led by Col. John Fuller burst on the scene. Approximately 3,000 Union soldiers and 1,800 Confederates were involved in the skirmish. Even though the Confederates suffered 500 casualties compared to the Union’s 237, they were considered the victors because Forrest’s troops were able to escape across the river and live to see another day.

Admission is $5. Proceeds benefit preservation of the Parker’s Crossroads Battlefield. For registration and additional information, contact www.parkerscrossroads.org email: pcvc@att.net or 731-968-1191.
