Thompson's Station to Commemorate 150th Anniversary of Civil War Battle With Living History Event

Mar 6, 2013

THOMPSON’S STATION, Tenn. - Homestead Manor, the antebellum estate in Thompson’s Station, will relive its fateful past 9 a.m. -7 p.m. March 9 as reenactors and historians from throughout the region assemble to commemorate the Civil War battle that occurred there March 5, 1863.

This living history day, hosted by the Thompson’s Station Economic Development Steering Committee, will feature artillery, cavalry and infantry demonstrations, walk-through exhibits including a sutlers camp and battlefield hospital, historian presentations and an evening dance to period music.

Another highlight of the event, Homestead Manor's interior will be transformed into a battlefield hospital. Reenactors portraying period doctors and nurses will usher “wounded” soldiers in from the skirmish outside and perform treatments while spectators looks on.

The Battle of Thompson’s Station produced many other memorable moments, including the raising of the Confederate flag by 17 year-old Alice Thompson, for whose family the town is named. When she saw the color bearer of the Arkansas 3rd regiment fall wounded, she famously bolted from her refuge in the cellar to retrieve the flag, inspiring the troops to continue the fight. This dramatic scene will be reenacted at the commemoration.

The event is open to the public and is suitable for school-aged children and older. Donations will be accepted at the gate and will be put toward historic preservation efforts in Thompson's Station. There is a suggested minimum donation of $1.00 per adult admission.

The event is supported by generous underwriting from sponsors including the Tennessee Equine Hospital, The Fields of Canterbury and Goodall Homes.
