Lisa Meitner - Woman of Science

In 1918, Dr. Lise Meitner, together with Otto Hahn, discovered the radioactive element protactinium (element 91). In December 1938, Lise provided the physical explanation of results obtained by Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassmann in their chemical experiments. Her contributions helped lead to the discovery of nuclear fission, and to our understanding of the fundamental structure of nature. Local exhibition sponsors are the Oak Ridge/Knoxville Section of the American Nuclear Society and the Federally Employed Women.
