“Quilts Then & Now Trunk Show” to be at Blount County Public Library
MARYVILLE, TN (January 12, 2009) Quilts, of course, provide service as warm blankets, especially during the frigid winter months. But from the earliest known times, quilts also have provided a creative outlet for many hard-working women whose lives were lacking in aesthetic beauty and comfort.
Combined with a multiplicity of fabrics and colors, hundreds of quilt patterns can be utilized as the basis for functional pieces of art, and people continue to devise wonderfully original designs.
“Quilts Then and Now” with a trunk show will be presented by Darlene Bakos and Debbie McMurray as a program and exhibit, sponsored by the Blount County Public Library, on Thursday, January 22, at 7:00 p.m.
The presentation of “something old, something new” will include
the progression of quiltmaking from the 1800s to the present, including techniques, traditions and patterns.
designing quilts today, using the Electric Quilt 6, a computer program for creating quilt patterns.

Darlene Bakos and Debbie McMurray had a chance meeting at a local quilt guild and
quickly formed an informal partnership in 2006. They began making quilts together and have successfully completed approximately 30 commissions in two years.
In 2008, the two Blount Countians sewed 75 years of Tennessee Valley Authority history in a quilt on display at the agency’s Knoxville offices.
They are quite a team in that Darlene loves the machine piecing part, and Debbie loves the quilting. Each complements the other in skills, talents and personality. Their friendship and business partnership are strong and stems from their focus on putting family first and demanding excellence in their quilt making.
Darlene Bakos taught in New York public schools for over 32 years. Upon retirement two years ago, she and her family moved to Maryville where she began her second career as a quilt maker. She has a personal connection with reproduction fabrics and turn of the century quilt patterns and loves the traditional art of hand piecing. Gingersnap Quilts is owned and operated by Bakos who specializes in creating traditional and contemporary quilts.
Whether it’s a t-shirt quilt, photograph quilt or a beautiful traditional quilt customized for you, Bakos can create a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. She teaches classes locally on machine and hand piecing and is an award-winning quilter on a local and international level. She is highly regarded among the quilt community for her exemplary piecing and workmanship.
Debbie McMurray owns Creative Quilts and has been in business for eleven years. She began her business by making memory quilts from baby clothing and memorabilia as well as art pieces replicated on fabric. Through the years, she has progressed to making t-shirt quilts, art quilts, photo quilts, memorial quilts and traditional quilts. She is an award-winning machine quilter on a local and international level. McMurray tens to gravitate toward the artful side of quilting and enjoys doing free form quilting and thread play on her longarm quilting machine. Her work is displayed on her website, www.creativequilts.com, or she has a blog at www.creativequilts.blogspot.com. She can be reached at 865-368-5549.
Free and open to the public, the program is at the Blount County Public Library, located at 508 N. Cusick Street, Maryville.
