Purchase the perfect native plants for your landscape while supporting Reflection Riding, an organization dedicated to educating the community about native plants, conservation and natural gardening. There will be over 110 different species of native plants to choose from. Experienced gardeners will be on hand to help you find the perfect native plants for your landscape. “Our customers are getting more and more interested in providing habitat for butterflies and pollinators,” said Greenhouse Manager Dr. Paola Zannini Craddock. “We will have plenty of nectar plants (different species of Asters, Hyssops, Coneflowers, Blazing Stars, Mountain Mints) and host plants for caterpillars (Milkweeds, Pipevines, Passionvines, Spicebush).” Zannini, her staff and volunteers will educate visitors about the importance of using native plants rather than non-native and potentially invasive species and how choosing the right plant can make less work for the gardener, support native wildlife and still look beautiful. The native greenhouse at Reflection Riding operates year-round, taking 120 to 160 different species of native plants, including perennials, grasses, shrubs and trees, from seed to bloom before putting them out for guests to purchase. “Native plant gardening means using the plants that are best adapted to the conditions where you live,” said Anita Greenwell, Greenhouse nursery assistant. “Native Plants are better designed to meet regional wildlife needs and because they are adapted to local climatic conditions and soils, are easier to maintain. Your garden can become a place of refuge.” While at the plant sale, visit areas of Reflection Riding for planting and garden ideas and view the same native plants thriving in their natural environment. During the three days of our native plant sale, Reflection Riding will offer free admission to all 317 acres, including the Nature Center - home of the endangered red wolf and other animal ambassadors - for guests to visit and explore. A variety of scheduled programs will be available for adults and children. Among the many activities will be nature crafts for children, a tour of our newest exhibit - the C.E. Blevins Nesting Birds of Reflection Riding, and walks or hikes focusing on history, fungi, butterflies, ferns and more! Take advantage of this open house opportunity to visit and enjoy Reflection Riding Arboretum & Nature Center free of charge. Plan to attend early to get your native plants of choice.
