Try 43,200 Ways to Tie Shoelaces at Blount County Public Library

Most people believe they learned all they needed to know about shoelaces in kindergarten. However, for an upcoming activity with laces at the Blount County Public Library, it’s possible to find something that they don't teach in kindergarten.
How many ways can you tie one (shoelaces) on? According to the website, http://shoesobsessions.wordpress.com/2008/07/14/the-art-of-shoe-lacing/, it seems that, for a shoe with six pairs of eyelets, there are 400 million different ways of lacing a shoe! If that count is limited to realistic ways to tie shoes, such as starting and finishing from the top eyelet or having each eyelet contribute to pulling together the sides of the shoe, there are still 43,200 ways to tie shoes. Apparently Burkard Polster, a mathematician at Monash University in Victoria, Australia, when he couldn’t sleep at night, spent considerable time evaluating shoelace tying and counting the ways. His descriptions were even published in a 2002 issue of Nature magazine (Burkard Polster. Nature. December 5, 2002).
Practice Tying One On To try tying one on, teens are invited to participate in a Do-It-Yourself week at the Blount County Public Library’s Teen Central from Sunday, June 14 through June 20.
