“Voice of the Smokies” Celebrates History of the National Park at Blount County Public Library
“The Voice of the Smokies” by Jeanie Hilten & Ken Voorhis is a program in celebration of the 75th anniversary of Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
A dramatic, musical and photographic performance dedicated to the Smokies and wilderness, the program will be performed by Ken Voorhis and Jeanie Hilten at the Blount County Public Library on Thursday, July 2, at 7:00 p.m.
Voices of the past present and future trace the path that people took to settle, shape, and then preserve this 'Place of Blue Smoke'. This inspirational and entertaining program celebrates wilderness and will be enjoyed by all who share the desire to preserve our nation's precious places. The program was written by the staff at Great Smoky Mountains at Institute at Tremont.
Ken Voorhis is executive director of Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont where he has served since 1984. He and his staff have developed a varied schedule of successful programs that encourage children and adults in the appreciation of Great Smoky Mountains National Park and their connection to the natural world. He lives in the park with his wife Jennifer who is also an educator. He is an avid and published photographer, storyteller and musician in addition to enjoying many outdoor pursuits including hiking, canoeing, birding, trees, and exploring out of the way places in the Smokies.
Jeanie Hilten, from the shores of Lake Michigan, to the cactus country of Arizona and now in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, has devoted her work and play to the celebration of nature and its power to enrich human lives. Since 2007, as Special Events Coordinator with the Smoky Mountain Visitors Bureau, Jeanie is glad to have the opportunity to bring people together for celebrations of the natural and cultural history of the Smokies.
From 2000 to 2007, Jeanie was Administrative Officer of Discover Life in America, Inc., a private non-profit organization coordinating the ambitious endeavor called the All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (ATBI) in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. She directed a strong science education effort with the project, combining the research of world-renowned experts in natural history with the participation of “citizen scientist” volunteers, teachers, and students, and the inventory and monitoring work of National Park staff.
Festivals and demonstrations of traditional mountain skills, music, crafts, and outdoor recreation are exciting ways to illustrate the unique heritage of this region and to carry it into the future.
Jeanie and husband Richard live in East Millers Cove on 22 acres of woods, fields, streams, and gardens. They enjoy many kinds of music, spending time with family and friends, hiking, and camping. Jeanie and Richard continue to travel both near and far, for inspiration, for knowledge, and just because they are curious to find what is around the next bend.
Free and open to the public, the program is at the Blount County Public Library, located at 508 N. Cusick Street, Maryville.
