UNCLE DAVE MACON DAYS OLD-TIME MUSIC AND DANCE FESTIVAL

City: Murfreesboro, TN
Region: Middle Tennessee
Subregion: Nashville & Surrounding Areas

Uncle Dave Macon Days is a three-day (July 9-11), family-oriented, traditional music and dance festival. The event has been selected as one of the top 20 events for July by the Southeast Tourism Society. It takes place in Cannonsburgh Village, located at 312 Front St. (just off Northwest Broad Street). A $5 admission is charged per day on Friday and Saturday. A two-day $8 ticket is available. Children 12 and younger are admitted free. There is no admission on Sunday. Free and paid parking are available
People line the parade route from the grounds at Central Middle School/Central Magnet School and down shady East Main Street toward the historic Rutherford County Courthouse, just to see the colorful collection of wagons, carriages, buggies and mounted entries move through town. The parade starts promptly at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 10. Eventually, the parade moves along West Main Street before crossing onto Northwest Broad Street and ending at Cannonsburgh Village, home of the festival.
Uncle Dave Macon Days is a three-day family-oriented celebration that takes place July 9-11. It celebrates the heritage of middle Tennessee with two days of highly charged acoustic instrument and dance contests. A Gospel Sing and Community Service Fair take place Sunday, July 11, starting at noon. Food vendors, arts and craft booths, living history demonstrations, children's' activities and much more celebrate the life and times of Uncle Dave Macon, one of the first stars in the early days of the Grand Ole Opry.
The parade began under the watchful eyes of the late John Blankenship and Forrest Pascal. Their goal was to start a motorless parade because Uncle Dave Macon's mule transportation company was put out of business by gas-powered engines.
The parade has several competitions for its entrants. Fifty-dollar prizes are awarded to the best entry in each of these categories: carriages, wagons, mounted riders and junior mounted riders. Additionally, a drawing for door prizes for parade participants is held at the conclusion of the parade.
