The early settlers in the Big South Fork country relied on subsistence farming for survival. Each spring, the mules and horses were hooked to the plow and the fields tilled for the planting of crops. It was hard work but a fascinating way of life. The tradition continues today, with many families in the area growing large gardens...with improved equipment, of course. Step back in time in the Big South Fork this spring by visiting the Lora Blevins homeplace (near the Bandy Creek Visitors Center). The day-long festival features plenty of events and is free to the public. Food is available from vendors, or you can bring your lunch. 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
