Tennesseans love their biscuits and cornbread. And who doesn't want to finish a fabulous meal with a fresh-baked confection? If you're on the trail of the best baked goods, start out at the northeastern corner of the state at the Dutch Maid Bakery in Tracy City, the oldest family-owned bakery in the state, serving breakfast and lunch daily. The Tellico Grains Bakery is the area's only wood-fired brick oven bakery.
In Maryville, sit down with some Italian sweets at Dolce's, where you can pair your coffee or espresso with cannoli or Cassata cakes. While you're in Knoxville, stop in Litton's for a red velvet cupcake or some key lime pie after dinner. Voted the best for cupcakes, Magpies, in Knoxville's downtown north, says it's "all butter all the time."
For something a little different, stop at the Pepper Patch Bakery and Candy Kitchen in Lynchburg, where you'll find tipsy cakes made with Jack Daniel's famous sippin' whiskey. The Aurora Bakery in South Nashville specializes in Mexican sweet breads and other international pastries. In west Tennessee, be sure to visit the Flippen Fruit Farm in Troy, where the famous Flippen Fruit Pies are made.
If it's biscuits or cornbread you're after, stop by the famous Loveless Cafe in Nashville. In east Tennessee, have breakfast or lunch at The Lunch House in east Knoxville for some of both, including their famous fried cornbread cakes. For a taste of prize-winning cornbread from all over the country, go to the National Cornbread Festival in South Pittsburg each April, sponsored by the Lodge Cast Iron company and Martha White Corn Meal Mix.
