I grew up in Memphis…land of King Cotton, beautiful women, old homes and lyrical, soft Southern voices. I grew up a romantic dreamer, reading books at Cossett Library. Of course, those dreams were fueled by my first big read – Gone with the Wind. Who couldn’t pretend they were Scarlett to Clark Gable’s Rhett?
Teenage dreams have to go away, or do they? Perhaps that’s why I love the antebellum homes of Tennessee. While walking through these spacious beautiful homes, it’s easy to close your eyes and see the swirling dresses of the beautiful belles, take a deep breath and inhale the scent of sweet magnolias, gardenias, and camellias, and step back into a time that predates the Civil War. Walk onto the lawn, close your eyes and see friends and neighbors enjoying a party weekend.
After all, it wasn’t possible to jump in your car and drive to someone’s house for a quick visit. A visit meant you stayed for several days and were entertained with other houseguests to fine dinners, dances, barbecues and perhaps even a race between the muscular stallions that brought you to the party.
In today’s hectic, fast-paced world, how could you not like to pretend to be there enjoying a carefree time? That’s what antebellum homes do for me. It’s better than any prescription to take stress out of your day.
That’s what I like about Tennessee antebellum homes. It’s possible to drive down an interstate at 70 miles an hour, get off the exit ramp and within minutes be back in that special time. With the help of knowledgeable docents, you are guided through a life you can only imagine. Descend slowly down that staircase. Are you Scarlett on your way to a weekend party? Or, are you on the arms of Rhett going down to dine by candlelight surrounded by beautiful china and silver that belonged to your grandmother?
Even though all antebellum homes are beautiful, none are identical. Just like Tennesseans, they all look different and each has a story to tell. That’s why visiting just one is not enough. When I leave one, I can’t wait until I can visit another.
If you’re lucky, don’t limit yourself to just one a trip. Find one of the many locations in this great state and spend a day or two or three exploring areas with antebellum homes.
I’m lucky. Sometimes dreams can come true…maybe not the way you dreamed them but pretty close. You see, I live in Maury County, just a few minutes from Nashville, and Maury County is the Antebellum Home Capital of Tennessee. Come see why I love this area and why is it is just one of many wonderful historical offerings in Tennessee.
