My Tennessee Story

There are so many great experiences to be had in Tennessee but you don’t take our word for it. Every day we feature a new story from someone who has enjoyed their time here.

My husband and I love motorcycle adventures. We love to combine trips where we plan an activity, but create the trip as we go. Last summer we decided to do a trip through middle and eastern Tennessee on the bike. Mind you, the time was August and it was the hottest on record; not necessarily the best time to take off into the elements. But we have romantic ideas that we get so few moments to escape to away from responsibilities and 5-year old twins.

We started in Nashville, our first love and favorite place to end up. But Monday morning we ventured towards the Great Smoky Mountains for a three-day experience, ending up in Oak Ridge for the night. Being on the back of the bike really lets you experience not only the scenery in a 360- degree view, but also the fragrances of the flowers and the ability to really feel when the moisture level or temperature changes.

Riding through the Smokies the next couple of days brought us to a humbler attitude and a spiritual state. You don't have a radio to listen to (usually!) when you are riding, but you have the sounds of nature and the water rushing over the rocks as you soar past them like an eagle. We rode the Cherohala Skyway, which contained the most breathtaking scenery that I had ever laid eyes on - bringing the majestic mountains from a dark, dry green in the foreground, to the many shades and layers of blue and grey along the horizon. If there ever was a way to touch the heavens, this was it!

We rode through southern Tennessee and up through Lynchburg and back towards Nashville, all the while taking in the vast changes in topography and feeling somehow part of it. Even though we didn't have opportunity talk much during the trip, riding on the back of a motorcycle through the Tennessee landscape somehow seemed to help communicate for us and teach us the romance of the scenery.
