Art Scenes across Tennessee
14 Places to Visit | Plan for 6-8 days
Dabble your vacation in a little bit of Tennessee art. Whether you’re a connoisseur or a novice, if you love art, you’ll love Tennessee. Begin in the west portion of the state at the Orpheum Theater where Broadway meets Beale Street. Hailed as the “South’s Finest Theatre,” the Orpheum host Broadway, ballet and opera performances. Catch a show here and visit the West Tennessee Regional Art Center. Located in historic Humboldt, TN in the restored City Hall, the art center features the significant Caldwell Collection and rotating art exhibits.
Move from west to middle and find yourself in Nashville’s Frist Center for the Visual Arts. Frist houses world-class art, interactive displays and educational programs. While you’re in Nashville, tour the beautiful Ryman Auditorium. Built in 1892, the Ryman offers a long line of interesting historical facts, including a place in the Grand Ole Opry’s history. Delve into all of Nashville’s artistic places and keep moving east.
Slightly southeast from Nashville, explore the Tullahoma Fine Arts Center & Regional Art Museum. The historic Baillet house showcases the center and museum. The Tullahoma Fine Arts Center and Regional Art Museum hosts exhibits, programs, festivals and a permanent art collection and makes an unique stop on your way to Chattanooga.
Chattanooga has quite an art district. The Hunter Museum of American Art is recognized as one of the country’s finest collections of art. The building itself is sculpted beautifully and perched on an 80-foot bluff along the Tennessee River.
Across the river, catch a show at one of America’s oldest theatres, the Chattanooga Theatre Centre. Within walking distance from Chattanooga, Bluff View Art District holds an intriguing collection of restaurants, gardens, galleries, inns, terrace cafes, working artists, historic homes, bocce court and banquet facilities combined with a spectacular view.
After Chattanooga, you must see Tennessee’s official theater in Knoxville, the Historic Tennessee Theatre. A 1928 movie palace completely renovated, the theater hosts classical music, vintage films, dance, theater, and modern performances. Knoxville also features the Knoxville Museum of Art and the artistic shopping and nightlife districts of Market Square and the Old City.
From Knoxville, experience the International Storytelling Center in Bristol. The center is a rare and enjoyable find with festivals, exhibits and live and recorded performances. Conclude your vacation with a bluegrass, Broadway or rock ‘n roll show at the Paramount Center for the Arts.
