Start in 1. LAWRENCEBURG and follow scenic Highway 43 north through Tennessee’s plantation country. Stop in 2. COLUMBIA, one of the state’s oldest National Register historic districts, for antiques shopping. Take an Antebellum tour through Maury County before driving north on Highway 31 towards 3. FRANKLIN. Explore Franklin’s 15-block downtown National Register District for unique shopping and sightseeing or visit the Carnton Plantation for a taste of Civil War history. Next, drive northwest to 4. NASHVILLE to tour the Grand Ole Opry and catch a show at the Bluebird Cafe. Head west on Interstate 40 and plan to stop at 5. HARPETH RIVER STATE PARK for a short two-mile hike to a bluff overlooking the Harpeth Valley. Take Route 249 to Route 49 and cut through Ashland City to Route 12, which runs north to 19th century
6. CLARKSVILLE, stopping for wine tasting at Beachaven Vineyards or Gallery 108 for student art. Head west to Fort Donelson National Battlefield in 7. DOVER, which was the site of the first decisive Union victory. Continue farther west to 8. LAND BETWEEN THE LAKES for hiking, biking, camping and fishing, or explore the elk and bison prairie, nature station and planetarium.
