The Delaney Brothers
Among the first renowned African American artists were brothers Beauford and Joseph Delaney. Beauford studied in Knoxville and Boston before associating with the Harlem Artists Guild and showing his work at “The Negro in Contemporary Art” exhibit at the Baltimore Museum, 1944. Joseph studied in New York with the famous Thomas Hart Benton. He returned to Knoxville at age 82 to become artist-in-residence at the University of Tennessee.
