Originally known as Bethel Church, this 1868 congregation supported the National Freedman's Aid Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church in founding nearby Morristown College in 1881. The original school taught reading, writing and arithmetic to freedmen (former slaves) following the Civil War. Though empty today, several of the college's buildings are historically recognized for their contribution to African-American education.
