Bluegrass Underground is a radio show recorded live 333 feet below ground at Cumberland Caverns in McMinnville, inside what was named the Volcano Room by the first people to behold the natural amphitheatre. No man-made sound reaches the Volcano Room and the living rock hued amid the eons is jagged and uneven, providing limited echo.

Bluegrass Underground is taped once a month and tickets can be purchased either on our website or at the Cumberland Caverns ticket office. 2009 performers include The Travelin' McCourys w/Ronnie Bowman, Steep Canyon Rangers, and Cherryholmes.

The primordial silence and perpetual darkness give way each month to the sounds of the finest music of the greatest bluegrass musicians on earth. Regardless of outside temperature, the Volcano Room is a constant 56 degrees. 

Directions: From Nashville: 18.5 miles on TN-55N to right on TN-55 Business (N. Chancery), 3.5 miles to Right on TN 56 (West Colville), 1.7 miles to left on Hwy 8, 4 miles to left on Dark Hollow Road, 1 Mile to left on Cumberland Caverns Road.

From Nashville on I-40 : Interstate 40 Southeast to Exit 239A (Watertown) 34 Miles to Smithville, Right on TN-56 (South Congress Blvd), 20 miles through McMinnville to left on TN-56 (Colville St), 1.7 miles to left on Hwy 8, 4 miles to left on Dark Hollow Road, 1 Mile to left on Cumberland Caverns Road.

From Chattanooga: Hwy. 27 North (Exit 178 on I-24W), 23 miles then continue on TN-111 north, Left on TN-8, 15.5 miles to right on Dark Hollow Road, 1 Mile to left on Cumberland Caverns Road.

From Knoxville: Interstate 40 West to Exit 288 (Cookeville) to TN-111,Left on TN-111 South through Sparta, 19 miles to merge onto US 70S to McMinnville, 18 miles to left on TN-30,immediate right on TN-127, 3 miles to left on Old Shellsford Rd, 1.3 miles to left on TN-8, 1.5 miles to left on Dark Hollow Road, 1 Mile to left on Cumberland Caverns Road.
