Cruise the Cherohala Skyway, a National Scenic Byway, and treat yourself to sprawling views of the Great Smoky Mountains to the northeast and the Tennessee River Valley to the west. The Cherohala Skyway crosses through the Cherokee National Forest and offers a glimpse into the unspoiled forest environment where Cherokee tribes and early pioneers traveled and settled in the Appalachian Mountains.

Before your trip on the Skyway, you might want to visit Tellico Plains' covered bridge, the largest in Tennessee. The Cherohala Skyway Visitor Center in Tellico Plains is a "must stop" before starting up the Skyway. Drop by for free maps, Skyway driving conditions and local area souvenirs and gifts. Picnic tables and spotless restrooms are available.

Enjoy mile-high vistas and brilliant season foliage as well as great hiking opportunities and picnic spots in these magnificent and seldom-seen portions of the southern Appalachian National Forest. The Skyway climbs from 800 to 5,300 feet in elevation through the Cherokee and Nantahala Forests. Picnic, hike, camp, canoe or kayak, bird watch, and view spectacular scenery.

The road winds through the picturesque Unaka Mountains. The route will charm you with mountain overlooks, outdoors adventure and numerous trails. The view simply doesn't get any better than this.
