Located in the heart of the Copper Basin, Ducktown is situated near the site where copper was discovered in 1843 by a prospector looking for gold in Potato Creek. The first copper mine opened in 1850; by 1860, over 1,000 men from all over the world were working the mines. Mining ceased in 1987, but the landscape and local architecture reminds us of the townÂ’s heritage, including worker houses and many neighborhoods listed on the National Historic Register.
