Founded in 1840, Clifton was named for its high cliffs and became an important shipping and commercial center for lumber, livestock and other supplies to be sent down the Tennessee  River via steamboat. Today, Clifton is a small, relaxing river town with historic buildings and many outdoor recreation sites. Highlights include the recently renovated Clifton City Marina, designated one of TVAÂ’s cleanest marinas; the Jack Nicklaus Signature 18-hole Ross Creek Landing Golf Course; and The Bear Inn Golf & River Resort right off the 15th hole of Ross Creek Landing.
