Free Hill Community & SchoolCelina, TNIt was here that Virginia Hill, a slave owner, acquired 2,000 acres; she moved all of her slaves here and set them free, creating a community unlike any other in the South at that time. Following the Civil War, many African- Americans relocated here as well. The school was a part of the Rosenwald School Building Program, an initiative that funded buildings constructed by and for African-Americans in the early 1900s. At the time this one was built in the late 1920s, one in every five rural schools for African-American students in the South was a Rosenwald School. |
