With the purpose of effectively marketing the Gatlinburg community and maximize efforts to promote tourism in the gateway city to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, local officials formed the Gatlinburg Tourism Development Authority effective July 1, 2012. The TDA successfully combined the tourism marketing functions of the City of Gatlinburg and the Chamber of Commerce into one entity doing business as the Gatlinburg Convention and Visitors Bureau, providing for increased involvement in the marketing of Gatlinburg by the business community.
