For most of the 19th century, funerals in Wears Valley were held here under the shelter of a large oak tree. According to local lore, when lightning struck the tree in 1902, residents erected Headrick Chapel to provide shelter on the cemeterys grounds. The chapels bell would ring once for every year of the deceaseds life, a tradition still observed here today.
