Since 1960, the Oliver family has been serving great food to travelers crossing Monteagle Mountain. It all started out at a little Drive-In called the “Bee Hive”, young Jim Oliver honed his skills of barbequing and customer service. Now, well over 50 years later, two of Jim’s children are still carrying on that same tradition of service and cooking that was there from the beginning, now it’s called Jim Oliver’s Smoke House. Located in Monteagle, 45 miles from Chattanooga, 80 miles from Nashville, on Interstate 24 at Exit 134, turn left off the exit 1000 feet to the Smoke House on the left.
The Menu features a lot of Smoked Meats; such as BBQ Ribs, Smoked Beef Brisket, Smoked Chicken, Smoked Hams – Honey Baked & Country, Smoked Bacon, and Smoked Roast Beef. Southern Fried items include some of the best Deep Fried Chicken & Farm raised Catfish that you’ll put in your mouth, fried Green Tomatoes, Hushpuppies & Corn fritters, pork skins, French fried potatoes, Frog Legs, Chicken Livers, Chicken Strips, for real Onion Rings, Fried Pickles, and oh yes . . . those famous Fried Pies. Lots of the food is cooked in old cast iron skillets, which impart that traditional “crispy around the edges” fried taste of country cooking; such as fresh buttermilk cornbread, and the tasty sweet skillet cake in several flavors, corn fritters, chicken, bacon, country ham, omelets, and the vegetable & meat casseroles made with fresh ingredients.
All during the growing season, local farmers and neighbors with gardens bring in their fresh vegetables & herbs to sell Betsy (Jim’s daughter), who over sees the food purchasing and preparation at the Smoke House; leaf lettuce, kale, carrots, onions, mushrooms, broccoli, tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, green beans, corn on the cob, beets, turnip greens, collard greens, potatoes, yams, cabbage, apples, cherries, strawberries, peaches, black berries, and apples; you get the point, whatever is in season we get it and use it in our salad bar, buffet, and in our daily menu.
Breakfast is served all day and night; so if your taste buds are turned toward fried eggs, omelets, hot homemade biscuits, country ham, smoked bacon, loaded grits, pancakes, French toast, milk gravy, and smothered hash browns, and more, you can get it anytime of day. We've got the best coffee anywhere, come in and we'll prove it!
Great grill items & sandwiches which made Jim famous at the Bee Hive are still served at the Smoke House including the huge Club Sandwich (almost too thick to put in your mouth), drive-in grilled cheese, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, bacon cheeseburgers, smoked turkey, catfish sandwiches, BBQ pulled pork sandwiches, fried green tomato sandwiches, beef brisket sandwiches, “truck stop” open faced roast beef and turkey sandwich dinner plates, country ham sandwiches, and of course the french fries, fried pickles, real sho’nuf onion rings, & fried green tomatoes all to accompany your sandwich.

We use chicken stock (not grease) to flavor most of our vegetables while cooking, and we use the beef/lamb stock to flavor our famous Vegetable Beef Soup; we get people who drive for 100's of miles just so thay can have some of that special homemade soup.

Legendary as well as up & coming Singer Songwriter Music Artist perform music and lyrics they have written; and they’ll tell you their story about how they came about to write the lyrics and if any noted major music artist have recorded it. The music varies from pop, to blues, to soul, some bluegrass, folk, and a little country makes the all the shows unique every time. Each show features the primary artist or group first, starting at 7pm for 2 hours. Then, another featured artist or group may perform for 30 minutes. To end up the evening, a Nashville style songwriter round is next which features 3 or 4 songwriters singing and performing their songs in rotation for about an hour or more. What's unique about songwriters is that you are actually watching and hearing songs sung by the original songwriter artist who wrote them; its really interesting to hear their version of the song. You may be watching a person sing their song which was ultimately recorded by great artist such as Toby Keith, or Keith Urban, Hank Williams, Jr., Elton John, Tim McGraw, Kenny Rogers, and many, many others. The songwriters say that the Smoke House venue is as good as or better than the famous Nashville music venues such as The Bluebird Cafe, Tootsies, the Wagon Wheel, and others in the Nashville Music scene.
