Joseph McMinn served as governor of Tennessee from 1815-1821, and McMinn County was named in his honor. He was a Cherokee Indian Agent stationed at the Indian Agency in Charleston from 1823 until his death in 1824. A 12-foot tall obelisk marks his grave in the Shiloh Presbyterian Cemetery.
