One of the South's oldest historically black colleges. LeMoyne Normal School was founded in 1862 by the American Missionary Association and funded by a $20,000 contribution from Pennsylvania native and staunch abolitionist, Dr. Julius LeMoyne. In 1968, the school merged with Owen Junior College (founded by the Tennessee Baptist Missionary and Educational Convention) to assume the name it holds today.
