Memphis' great love affair with pit smoked barbecue began in the early 1920's. This was when Leonard Heuberger opened his stand with only 5 stools, selling his barbecue sandwich for only five cents. In trying to satisfy the demand, his little barbecue stand soon became the largest drive-in restaurant of its time.

Visited by people far and wide, including Elvis Presley, Leonard's fame quickly grew. Today, the old drive in location no longer stand and Leonard has since passed, but the labor intensive recipes that made Leonard's famous for pit cooked ribs and pork shoulders remain.
