Liberty Gapwww.tennesseebackroads.org Adams, TNGeneral McCook’s Union forces were advancing from Murfreesboro via Fosterville and New Millersburg. General Patrick Cleburne’s Confederate forces defended the gap. When the fighting began on June 24, 1863, it had been raining hard all morning. The Confederate pickets in front of Liberty Gap, the 3rd Kentucky Cavalry, allowed themselves to be surprised and driven back almost to the infantry lines before an alarm was sounded. The day ended with a Confederate withdrawal to a position behind Field’s Branch. On June 26th, Cleburne received orders to abandon his position and the Confederates left Liberty Gap before daylight on June 27th. |
