Originally known as “Cedar Ford,” this is the birthplace of country music icons Chet Atkins and Kenny Chesney. A notorious distillery once operated just outside of town, sending wagon loads ofcorn whiskey out onto Thunder Road toward Knoxville. It was run by the Lay family, saloon owners rumored to have assisted one of Butch Cassidy’s gangs in escaping from a Knoxville jail.
