Monterey was once the pioneer settlement of “Standing Stone,” so named for a large boulder on the historic Walton Road nearby. In 1893, it was renamed “Monterey,” Spanish for “king of the mountain.” During the early 1900s, Monterey became a resort town that boasted seven hotels and drew summer guests who came to enjoy the cool temperatures and mountain scenery. Coming into town, you'’ll pass the 1909 Imperial Hotel, which stands as a quiet reminder of the town’'s resort days.
