On your way back to the trail, you’ll drive past the building that helped give Shelbyville the name “Pencil City.” This is the oldest pencil company in the South, dating back to 1916 and still operating in its original location. The Turner Normal Institute, a McKissack & McKissack design, once stood adjacent to this site.
