Originally known as Mouse Creek, this town was renamed in 1897 to avoid confusion with a railroad stop in Jefferson City called Mossy Creek. The townÂ’s name was based on the fictional character in a dime novel, a Native American named Nee-o-tah. Niota is famous for being the birthplace and home of Harry T. Burn, who cast the deciding vote in the Tennessee House of Representatives that ratified the 19th Amendment, giving women the right to vote.
