This one-room schoolhouse was built in 1919 and was used as a school until 1949. There were hundreds like it in the area, where students walked for miles to learn in these cold, unlit buildings, bringing their lunches in baskets or pails. Teachers carried on their profession with few books and materials, for little pay, under trying conditions.
