Quick Information

Passport to Cherokee Heritage

Cleveland, TN

What is now known as the Ocoee Region was once the gateway to the Cherokee Nation. In order for a citizen of the newly created United States to enter, one must receive a passport from the Cherokee Indian Agency. All of this was located just south of the Hiwassee River in present-day Bradley County, Tennessee and its environs. The richness of the history of this are being shared with you, some of it interpreted and some of newly rediscovered. All of it is now available in the brand new brochure Passport to Cherokee Heritage.

See new sites Lewis Ross House/Barrett Hotel, Rattlesnakes Springs the non-extant Cherokee Indian Agency and Henegar House along with sites that have existed such as Red Clay State Park, the Hair Conrad Cabin and John Ross's last homeplace east of the Mississippi.
