The old Frost Road from Crossville to Sparta, used by settlers in covered wagons, made the site accessible as early as 1819. In 1884, the Pleasant Hill Academy was founded, the only school in this part of the Cumberlands offering advanced elementary and high school courses. A site just east of Pleasant Hill, Camp Crossville, was used as a POW camp during WWII, housing German and Italian officers from November 1942 until the end of the war.
