The Johnson City Doughboy Statue

Johnson City, TN

Replications of E.M. Viquesney's "The Spirit of the American Doughboy" are memorials to World War I infantry soldiers who were known as doughboys. The statue in Johnson City was unveiled on Nov. 11, 1935.

Viquesney created the Doughboy in 1920 in response to high national interest in honoring those who served in WWI. He wanted to show the determination of the American Doughboy to preserve freedom, so he created a memorial of showing a soldier striding forward, his right arm extended with a grenade in the upraised hand.
