This Plantation Was established by Revolutionary War Veteran Timothy Chandler and his son John in 1791. Named for its annual wheat crop, this Plantation grew to become Sevier County’s largest and most productive, with the first regulated distillery in the state, wheat whisky was shipped via flat boats to New Orleans. The Mansion was occupied for several months during the Civil War and used as a field house and hospital. Chandlers' freed slaves inherited part of Wheatlands in 1875, and formed the Chandler Gap community. The Historic Structures are listed on the National Regiser of Historic Places and include the orginal Smoke House, Loom House, Summer Kitchen, and Slave Cemetery. The Federal Mansion was build circa 1825 by brick mason, builder and brewer William Morgan from New York. The plantation is managed by the non profit group, Wheatlands Foundation
