Established in 1877 as a mining community, this was the home of the largest mine in Marion County. Many immigrants came here from Great Britain and the surrounding European countries to work, and the town soon became a thriving community. The focus turned back to agriculture as the railroads that once hauled coal began to move agricultural products, and today, Whitwell is a peaceful little town with a surprising international attraction.
