There’s something magical about Historic RCA Studio B, and when you step foot into its fabled halls, it’s easy to see why. This is the place where musical icons have recorded some of the greatest songs of our time. As the birthplace of more than 35,000 legendary songs – and more than 1,000 American hits – this iconic recording studio in the heart of Nashville’s Music Row not only impacted the course of numerous musical genres; it played an integral role in establishing Nashville’s reputation as world-famous Music City.

RCA Studio B in its early days.

It all started in 1957, when Chet Atkins and Steve Sholes of RCA Victor Records contracted local businessman Dan Maddox to build the studio. The building plans were sketched out on a dinner napkin, and four months later, the studio was open for business.

The next several decades welcomed a parade of musical game-changers, as the likes of Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Charley Pride and Elvis Presley called this studio home. During his time at the studio, Chet Atkins became a champion of what would become known as the Nashville Sound: integrating contemporary pop elements such as background vocals and strings, which ultimately catapulted country music to a much wider audience.

Imagine sitting behind the controls of this famed studio during the Golden Age of Country, one of the most exciting times in Nashville’s musical history. You’d hear Connie Smith singing “Once a Day,” Dolly Parton crooning her bittersweet “I Will Always Love You” and Don Gibson singing “Oh Lonesome Me” in his sweet, easygoing voice. Even today’s country legends have carried on the legacy of recording within these hallowed walls — superstars Marty Stuart, Carrie Underwood, Martina McBride and Wynonna have all found their piece of the Studio B magic. Experience it for yourself with a behind-the-scenes tour.
