Twelve historic sites and one museum have partnered to celebrate history on Saturday, April 6. The historic sites offer special programming and/or discounts to the public to encourage everyone to explore the rich history of Sumner County. Participating locations include:

Castalian Springs

Hawthorn Hill – 195 Old Highway 25

Tours: 10am - 4pm
Cost: Free
Hawthorn Hill, ancestral home of the Bate family and namely Dr. Humphrey Bate, will be open for tours. Dr. Bate was influential in the early WSM radio show (what later became the Grand Ole Opry). This unique site was opened to the public for the first time in late 2017.

Rogan's Cottage at Bledsoe's Fort Historical Park – 2923 Hartsville Pike
Tours: 10am - 4pm
Cost: Free
Rogan's Cottage is an authentic Irish dwelling right here in Sumner County! The Rogan Cottage will be open with costumed interpreters and guests can enjoy free refreshments. Kids will also love learning and playing frontier games!

Wynnewood State Historic Site – 205 Old Highway 25
Tours: 10am - 4pm
Cost: Discounted rate of $5/person for the day
Wynnewood, one of the largest log structures in Tennessee, was home to a mineral springs resort after it was built in 1828. Guests who tour will receive complimentary refreshments with their discounted tour prices! Enjoy the tag sale at Wynnewood, too!


Cottontown

Bridal House – 2315 Highway 25 W
Tours: 10am - 3pm
Cost: Free
Tour this 1819 log structure with period-dressed interpreters, enjoy 19th fiddle music and learn about Fraktur art, elaborate folk art created by the Pennsylvania Dutch from 1740-1860. Fraktur art demonstrations and sale by Pam Lambert!

Gallatin

Douglass-Clark House – 2115 Long Hollow Pike
Tours: 9am - 4:30pm
Cost: Free
Tour one of Sumner County's earliest courthouses from 1788-1790 and learn about how the family's life at the house changed when four sons enlisted in the Civil War. Also situated on the Station Camp Greenway on the creek, a great place for exercise and leisure walks!

Historic Rose Mont – 810 S Water Ave
Tours: 10am - 3pm
Cost: Free
Historic Rose Mont is offering free tours led by period-dressed interpreters through this unique antebellum house, the former home of Judge Jo Conn Guild. Learn about his thoroughbreds & his time as a prisoner during the Civil War!

Historic Stonewall – 332 E Main St
Tours: 10am - 2pm
Cost: Free
Tour the museum for free and explore the county's history through a variety of exhibits and displays including Native American artifacts, vehicles, machinery, photos, and more! Also see the original signs of Randy's Record Shop and the Sumner Drive-In! Next door is Trousdale Place, which is also free, so be sure to visit both!

Sumner County Museum – 183 W Main St
Tours: 10am - 2pm
Cost: Free
Tour the museum for free and explore the county's history through a variety of exhibits and displays including Native American artifacts, vehicles, machinery, photos, and more! Also see the original signs of Randy's Record Shop and the Sumner Drive-In! Next door is Trousdale Place, which is also free, so be sure to visit both!

Trousdale Place – 183 W Main St
Tours: 10am - 2pm
Cost: Free
The former home of Tennessee Governor William Trousdale is an example of a city house, as it sits in the heart of downtown Gallatin. Docents will provide free tours and share the lives of those who lived there. The Sumner County Museum next door is also open & free!

Goodlettsville

Historic Mansker's Station & Bowen Plantation House – 705 Caldwell Drive
Tours: 10am - 2pm
Cost: $6-$8/person
Historic Mansker's Station will be leading tours with interpreters through the fort! Also join Historic Mansker’s Station from 10:30am – 11:30am for a Fireplace Chat with Mr. Paul Cross as he shares how the restoration of the Bowen House was completed. Mr. Cross led the project in 1976 when he was with the Tennessee Historical Commission. The Bowen House was originally constructed in 1787 by Captain William Bowen and was the birthplace of Tennessee Governor William Bowen Campbell. The Bowen House is said to be the oldest standing brick home in Middle Tennessee. The house was habitable through the early 1960s at which time it became abandoned due to its deplorable condition. After the restoration process in the late 70s, the house opened for tours in 1980 and remains open for tours today. This segment is free, however, space is limited. Please call (615) 859-3678 to reserve your seat.

Hendersonville

Monthaven Arts and Cultural Center – 1017 Antebellum Circle
Tours: 10am - 5pm
Cost: Free
Built around 1860 and used as a field hospital during the Civil War, Monthaven now hosts a variety of exhibits and events throughout the year. Art, photography, classes, and more grace the large antebellum rooms and exhibits change throughout the year. Past exhibits included works by Autumn de Forest, Alexandre Renoir, William Lee Golden, and Marty Stuart! Their April 6 exhibit will be the 43rd Annual Sumner County Student Art Show!

Portland

Cold Springs School – 303 Portland Blvd
Tours: 2pm - 4pm
Cost: Free
Built in 1857, this one-room school was used early in the Civil War by Confederate soldiers stationed at Camp Trousdale in Portland. The school features pictures of past classes and teachers, sharing tidbits about education over the last 150 years!
