Learn more about Flag Day Ceremony .
American Legion Post 4 and Auxiliary Unit 4 will sponsor a flag retirement. The event is open to the public. Anyone who has a torn and tattered flag in need of retirement may bring it with them to be retired. Members of the audience will be given the opportunity to present a flag for retirement either in honor of a living veteran or in memory of a deceased veteran. Those who do not have a flag to bring may present one of the flags the American Legion has collected since the last flag retirement. In 1949, President Harry Truman signed legislation designating June 14 of each year as national Flag Day, a day for Americans to reflect on freedoms and the principles of the nation for which the flag stands - liberty, unity, justice, and sacrifice. Though Flag Day is not a federal holiday, the U.S. government encourages its citizens to display "Old Glory" outside their homes and businesses as a show of respect for the flag.
