Started in 1889 as a mission church by a Pennsylvania group, this congregation first met in an old dance hall. Its first minister, Jacob L. Cook, was the son of former slaves; he also founded a school in the area. This 1892 church was funded and furnished by its Northern sponsors, including chairs removed from an opera house that are still in use today.
