Highlander worked to build progressive labors movements in the 1930s and 40s. In the 50s and 60s, Highlander changed its focus to the Civil Rights Movement. Rosa Parks attended a school desegregation workshop at Highlander four months before sparking the Montgomery Bus Boycott. “ Through popular education, participatory research, and cultural work, we help create spaces — at Highlander and in local communities — where people gain knowledge, hope and courage, expanding their ideas of what is possible.
