This federal fortification, named for Col. George P. Smith of the 129th Illinois Infantry, took on greater strategic significance in August 1862 after John hunt Morgan’s confederate cavalry had damaged the railroad line to Nashville at South Tunnel. Fort Smith served as a temporary railhead for the Federal supply line until the tunnel was reopened in the fall of 1862.
