About the Trails & Byways Initiative
If Tennessee's big cities take center stage on your vacation, consider this trail guide your backstage pass to the backroads that will help you discover what lies off the beaten path.
Three statewide and 15 regional trails – with names like "Proud Mary," "Ring of Fire" and "Sunny Side" – originate in or run through your favorite Tennessee destinations such as Memphis, Nashville, Knoxville, Chattanooga, and the Great Smoky Mountains. And the best part is you can decide when, where and how long you want to travel.
Make it a day trip or spend a few nights at a Tennessee State Park or quaint bed and breakfast along your route. Authentic experiences, iconic attractions and hidden gems await in every corner of the state.
While you're traveling the trails don't miss the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of Native Americans and pioneers, take the routes used by African Americans along the Underground Railroad or drive the roads used to deliver moonshine on one of Tennessee's officially designated National Scenic Byways. It's time to hit the trail!
