Fall Leaf Report

The main fall leaf season is still several weeks away, as leaves will be in full color mid-to-late October. In East Tennessee’s Great Smoky Mountain National Park, color has begun to develop in high elevation areas. Birch trees are yellow, and sumac and witch hobble have red leaves. Visitors will see colors along the crests of the mountains in the next week or so.

At low to middle elevations, dogwood trees have begun to turn red and will change into vibrant reds later in October.  Sourwood and red maple are also turning red.

Fall color in Middle and West Tennessee areas is sparse now, but will make its autumnal turn in the coming weeks.

Fall flowers displays are glorious now including purple asters, white asters, black-eyed Susans, pale jewelweed, ironweed, great blue lobelia, closed gentian, and goldenrod. In the forests, look for the vibrant pink, purple, and red fruits of hearts-a-bustin' bushes and the brilliant reds of dogwood berries.
