Nestled in the heart of Tennessee, renowned for its majestic mountains, vibrant music scene, and legendary moonshine tales, Johnson County is home to the Copperhead Road Landmark at Watauga Lake Winery in Butler. Inspired by Steve Earle's iconic country rock anthem, "Copperhead Road," after its designation as a Tennessee state song last year, the landmark pays homage to the song's local roots. Centered around a customized 1949 Dodge Sedan adorned with a mural by Bluegrass star Tim White.
A Collaboration for Music and Tourism
In May of 2024, The Copperhead Road Landmark and Music Fest was launched as a collaborative effort between the Johnson County Tourism Office and Watauga Lake Winery, with funding provided by the Tennessee Department of Tourism Development, Tennessee Arts Commission, and The Waterfront Group. The landmark is already featured in the Northeast Tennessee Tourism Association's "Bootleggers & Burnouts Trail" self-guided driving tour. Additionally, the Johnson County Tourism Office is pursuing the landmark's inclusion on the Tennessee Music Pathways Trail.
A New Future for Copperhead Road
A year later, it has been announced that the former Dry Run School (Watauga Lake Winery) will become the new home of Tennessee Hills Distillery. This will be the fourth location in the area, complementing existing sites in Johnson City, Jonesborough, and Bristol. The renovated facility, anticipated to open in autumn 2025, will offer tastings, historical exhibits, tours, and an immersive experience unique to the region. The venue will feature moonshine and music, with the Copperhead Road Landmark serving as a central attraction.
The initial phase of renovations at Villa Nove Farm and Vineyard has been completed, with plans for further expansion. A new Watauga Lake Winery will be constructed near the vineyard, providing tastings, dining options, and live entertainment at both locations.
